Overview

Witchy Business is a Tabletop Card Game where players compete to collect various ingredients to summon a variety of mythological monsters!

Taking an easily understandable concept of Witches brewing potions, players can immediately relate to the game due to its accessible theme.

While the concept is simple, Witchy Business offers engaging and strategic gameplay as players try to thwart each others plans.

Project Goals

The 2 main goals for Witchy Business were:
1) Make a game which could be easily pick up and played.
2) Had replayability through an engaging core gameplay loop.

Theme and Card Creation

As Witchy Business was intended to be easily accessible, I chose to base the game around folklore and mythology player's would easily recognise.

Originally, Witchy Business focused on Western European mythology and folklore. Eventually expanding to include other areas as well.

The attributes a Monster could have were split into 6 different Elemental-alignments as well as 9 different Monster Types.

Testing and Balancing

Throughout the development of the project, I conducted multiple User Testing sessions. Where I was particularly interested in which cards testers felt were too strong or weak and which cards they found the most engaging to play. Using this information, I then balanced the cards accordingly, adjusting stats on cards or in certain cases reworking their effects entirely to suit the flow of the gameplay.

Abertay Graduate Show

Witchy Business was displayed at the Abertay Graduate Show 2019. Where it received a positive attention from attendees, with some attendees coming back on following days to play it again.

I was then alerted to the possibility of attending the Coca-Cola 5by20  Fastrack to Business opportunity. Where I then completed an intensive 5 day programme where I gained insight into business management, marketing and finance. With the programme culminating in pitching Witchy Business to a panelist of Dundee business experts.

Going Forward

Since graduating from my Honors, I have continued developing Witchy Business in my spare time.

With my main intention being to redesign the visuals to be more attractive to the playerbase. Which in further playtests has been positively received. My next steps are to work with an Artist who will be able to make artwork for Witchy Business, and then hopefully release the game as a commerical product.
